Our Story

From a small town in Tuscany to the kitchens of Manila — nonna's recipe, unchanged.

A Nonna's Recipe, a Family's Legacy

Mascarpone Cake By Benassi is still run by just one woman and a small, dedicated team — Katia Benassi-de Guzman. Born to an Italian father and a Filipina mother, Katia grew up in the small Italian town of Massa, Tuscany, where tiramisu was known simply as "mascarpone cake" and was lovingly prepared by Italian nonnas at every family gathering.

Her own nonna passed down the recipe — a piece of home that traveled with Katia's family when they moved to Manila. For years, the cake was made only for family dinners and close friends. It first gained a wider audience at the Benassi family's Italian restaurant in Ortigas. Even after the restaurant closed, the craving for it never did.

The turning point came when an influencer discovered the cake at a friend's gathering. Orders began to surge, an Instagram account was created in 2019, and the rest, as they say, is delicious history. Today, Mascarpone Cake By Benassi features on several "Best Tiramisu in Manila" lists — from influencers to major publications like Tatler PH, Rappler, and When In Manila.

Why We Do What We Do

Preserving Nonna's Tradition

Katia's mission has always been to preserve her grandmother's original recipe — not to modernise it, not to localise it, but to honour it exactly as it was made in Tuscany. The recipe is not a template; it is a living piece of family heritage. Every tray that leaves the kitchen carries that commitment.

Uncompromising Ingredients

Katia still personally sources mascarpone cream from Italy. There are no local substitutes, no cost-cutting shortcuts. The savoiardi biscuits are coffee-soaked the traditional way, and the cocoa powder is dusted with the care of someone who has done it all her life. Quality is not a marketing word here — it is the only option.

Made for Moments That Matter

From a humble family table in Tuscany to the weddings and celebrations of Manila's most beloved figures, this cake has always been about the moments it marks. Katia takes pride in being entrusted with milestones — anniversaries, birthdays, "just because" days — and she makes every order as if it were for her own family.

What We Stand For

01

Authenticity Over Trend

The recipe does not change because the market does. Nonna's mascarpone cake is the product — and it always will be.

02

Italian Craftsmanship

Every element — from the imported mascarpone to the hand-dusted cocoa — reflects the standards of an Italian kitchen, not a mass production line.

03

Personal Attention

Katia handles most orders personally. That level of care cannot be scaled — and it is precisely what makes every tray different from anything you can buy in a pastry shop.

04

Community and Trust

Every repeat customer is a vote of confidence. With over 39,000 Instagram followers and growing word-of-mouth, the brand is built on real relationships, not advertising.

05

A Taste of Home for Everyone

Katia's vision is to let every person in Manila experience what it felt like to sit at her grandmother's table in Massa — pure, unhurried, and deeply satisfying.
